Tyneside is currently home to our only storage location outside of Wales (so to us it’s pretty special!).
But where is it exactly?
Sitting on the banks of the River Tyne, Tyneside is located in the county of Tyne and Wear in the North East of England.
Split into North and South factions that are separated by the River, Tyneside covers a huge area across the region.
Just a few of its towns include Gateshead, Wallsend, Tynemouth, North Shields and South Shields and its city is Newcastle upon Tyne (or just ‘Newcastle’).
Tyneside sits under the county of Northumberland and above County Durham, and runs along the coast of the North Sea.
The history of Tyneside
Located on England’s northeastern coast, where the River Tyne flows into the North Sea, this strategic site has historically served as a crossing point for marine trade and cultural exchange.
The history of Tyneside can be seen through its renowned landmarks. The Tyne Bridge, a symbol of industrial legacy, spans the river, while St. Nicholas’ Cathedral tells stories from years past.
Industry and innovation
Tyneside has effectively transformed itself from a manufacturing capital to a technology and research powerhouse. It is home to world-class institutions, state-of-the-art research organisations, and vibrant technology clusters, which is at the cutting edge of medical, engineering, and digital innovation.
Former industrial sites have transformed dramatically in recent years. Once a shipbuilding centre, the revitalised Quayside neighbourhood today includes sophisticated cultural hubs, riverside walkways, and international cafés, transforming Tyneside’s urban landscape.
Community and culture
The residents of Tyneside, affectionately known as Geordies, are the region’s heart and soul. The distinct local dialect (‘Up the Toon’!) is repeatedly chosen as the most popular UK accent, and the people and communities are full of warmth and friendliness.
In Tyneside, cultural enrichment thrives, with the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art functioning as a creative light. Its avant-garde exhibitions push artistic limits, encouraging a creative discourse that goes beyond convention. Meanwhile, the Sage Gateshead elevates sound to the level of art, showcasing a symphony of musical genres within its acoustically stunning halls.
