#1 – Cardiff arcades & the Christmas market
14th November – 23rd December
Monday – Saturday: 10am-6pm
Cardiff’s Christmas market is a staple ‘thing to do’ every year; 2019’s stalls include artwork of local places, ceramics, jewellery, glasswork, food, and more.
With a variety of stalls to wander through, it’s always great for a day out – and a perfect opportunity to pick up some gifts on the way too.
It’s worth mentioning that stalls can change daily as stall plots alter, so there are always new things appearing.
At the same time, our year-round arcades are the envy of other UK cities, and at Christmas they burst into twinkly light-filled life!
Our favourite find this year is the Makers Arcade pop-up in Morgan Arcade – a large open space lined with gorgeous handmade stalls from Etsy makers and more.
#2 – Winter Wonderland, Cardiff
8th November – 6th January 2020
Monday – Friday, before 20th Dec: noon-10pm
Monday – Friday, from 21st Dec: 10am-10pm
This year, Winter Wonderland returns to its usual spot on the lawn of Cardiff City Hall – it’s central and has beautiful views.
Joining this year with the classic stalls, Big Wheel, music and rides, is the brand new Alpine Ice Trail. For the first time ever, we are able to skate around the whole site!
#3 – Cardiff Castle underground cinema
21st December – 23rd December. Times vary.
It’s dark, it’s medieval, and it’s full of Christmas favourites!
Is Christmas really Christmas without watching those classic Christmas films? Whether it be The Grinch, The Polar Express, or Home Alone, you can take your pick and watch them underground in the Cardiff Castle medieval Undercroft.
A perfect time to chill but also keep those spirits lifted. Best enjoyed warm, with a toasty blanket
#4 – Bingo Lingo: The Ultimate Christmas Cracker, Depot
Every Friday & Saturday until the 27th Dec
Doors open at 5pm and close at 11pm
And it’s back! A cracking night out (see what we did there? 😏) full of fun and energy.
Last year there were 9 sellouts! And the rumour around town is that this year is going to be even better than before. If bingo, boogying or singing your heart out is your thing then this is right up your street – a great way to celebrate and spend time with friends.
#5 – Santa’s grotto, Queen Street
Open every day of the week between 10th November – 24th December, from 10:30am
Still haven’t sent him your list yet? You can grab a one-on-one with Saint Nick himself – find him in his traditional wooden chalet outside Superdrug on Queen Street!
From only £6.50, each child gets to visit Santa and receive a gift (no booking required). Certainly a lovely experience for children to feel the magic of Christmas (and also a way of keeping them happy while you shop)!
#6 – Santa’s express steam train, Mermaid Quay
30th November – 5th January 2020
Access to sit on the train: 10am – 6pm daily
Hop on the 300,000 pieced lego built Express train, and get a festive family photo to add to the Christmas album of 2019.
You won’t be alone as one of Santa’s elves will be sitting right beside you being picture ready! Don’t forget to say cheesssseeee 😁
#7 – Russian State Ballet fairytales, St David’s Hall
19th December – 31st December. Times vary.
Possibly the most cultural of all our Christmas 2019 events in Cardiff! This year, audiences will be blown away by the three enchanting productions Coppélia, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
The Russian State Ballet dancers initially marked their Cardiff Christmas anniversary in 2002, and are on the return. They’re more dazzling than ever, having achieved 16 additional UK tours under their belts in the meantime.
#8 – Santa’s Victorian Christmas, Cardiff Castle
14th November – 23rd December
Sessions last 30 mins, between 4pm-6:30pm
Cardiff Castle is welcoming us to enjoy a family day out full of festivity and candle lighting, in their beautiful Victorian apartments.
Get stuck in with arts & crafts, dress up and Santa visits complete with gifts. Mulled wine and mince pies will be provided too!

#9 – Winter Lights at Dyffryn Gardens
18th December – 5th January
See the lights every day between 4-7pm
Magical, twinkly lights in a festival of colour – a stunning evening experience for everyone.
The house and gardens will be lit up with light and colour for this magical trail. The entry cost is the normal admission price, and the event is dog-friendly.
#10 – Kids’ Christmas Party at Techniquest, Cardiff Bay
This year, Santa is making a special visit at Techniquest – a party to which you and your children are invited!
This exciting event, suited best for 3-8 year olds, involves hands-on exhibits, face painting, festive music, treats, a balloon modeller and more.
This all takes place over 2 floors, with plenty of things to do. Enjoy all the fun but don’t forget to get a selfie with Santa!
Out of all our top festive picks of Christmas 2019 events in Cardiff, we hope you find something extra Christmassy to enjoy!
