Moving House Storage Checklist: Everything You Need to Sort

A good checklist takes some of that stress away.

Between exchanging contracts, booking a van, and trying to remember which box the kettle’s in, it’s easy for things to slip through the cracks. Here’s everything worth sorting, in the order it usually needs doing.

Weeks Before: Get Organised Early

The earlier you start, the calmer the whole move feels.

A few weeks out, get these sorted:

  • Confirm your moving date with all parties involved
  • Book a removal company or van, popular dates go fast
  • Start decluttering room by room, donate or bin what you don’t need
  • Order packing boxes, tape and labels in bulk
  • Notify your bank, GP and other services of your change of address

Getting ahead of the admin now means fewer surprises closer to the day.

Sorting What Needs Storage

Not everything needs to travel straight from old house to new house.

Storage is worth considering if you’re:

  • Moving into a smaller space and need to downsize gradually
  • Facing a gap between moving out and moving in
  • Renovating your new place before you can properly unpack
  • Selling furniture that doesn’t fit but hasn’t found a buyer yet

Booking a unit in advance means it’s ready and waiting, not a last-minute scramble.

Packing Room By Room

Random packing leads to random unpacking. Room by room keeps things sane.

A sensible order to work through:

  • Start with rooms you use least: spare rooms, lofts, garages
  • Move to seasonal items and things you won’t need before the move
  • Pack everyday essentials last, so you’re not living out of boxes early
  • Keep one “first night box” separate: kettle, chargers, toiletries, bedding

Label every box with the room it’s going to and a rough idea of what’s inside.

What To Check Before Moving Day

A few checks now save a lot of hassle on the day itself.

Before the big day:

  • Confirm access times at both properties, especially parking for a van
  • Check meter readings are noted at both old and new addresses
  • Make sure keys are arranged and confirmed with agents or solicitors
  • Set aside important documents (passports, certificates) separately, not in a box

Nothing derails moving day faster than a locked gate or a missing key.

On Moving Day Itself

Moving day goes smoother with a plan, even a rough one.

Keep on hand:

  • Your first night box
  • Phone chargers and a portable battery
  • Snacks and water, moving is thirsty work
  • A printed inventory list, in case anything needs checking off

If you’re using storage, load anything destined there first. It saves double-handling later.

Settling Into Your New Place

The move doesn’t end when the van drives off.

Once you’re in:

  • Unpack essentials first, then work room by room
  • Check nothing’s been damaged in transit
  • Update your address with any services you missed
  • Review what’s in storage and set a rough date to sort it properly

There’s no rush to unpack everything in one weekend. Give yourself time.
