Getting Your Caravan Ready for Its First Trip of the Year

You’ve got the snacks packed, the route planned, and visions of peaceful countryside… until you realise your caravan has been sitting still for months and might not be as ready as you are.

Before you hitch up and head off, here’s how to get your caravan road trip ready without any last-minute chaos.

Start With a Proper Air Out

First things first… open everything.

After months in storage, your caravan needs fresh air:

  • Open doors, windows, and roof vents
  • Let it breathe for a bit
  • Say goodbye to that “storage smell”

Instant improvement, minimal effort.

Give It a Deep Clean

Even if you cleaned it before storing, it’ll need a refresh.

Inside:

  • Wipe down surfaces
  • Hoover floors and upholstery
  • Check for any damp or mould

Outside:

You’ll feel about 10x more excited for your trip once it’s clean. Trust us.

Check for Damp (Don’t Skip This)

Damp is the silent mood killer of caravan trips.

Look out for:

  • Musty smells
  • Discolouration on walls or ceilings
  • Soft spots

If something feels off, deal with it before you go. It won’t magically fix itself on the motorway.

Get the Water System Back Up and Running

If you drained everything before storage (gold star if you did), now’s the time to reverse it.

  • Refill the water system
  • Run taps to flush everything through
  • Check for leaks

Pro tip: run it for a few minutes to clear out anything that’s been sitting in the pipes.

Reconnect and Check the Battery

Your battery’s had a nice long nap. Time to wake it up.

  • Reconnect it if you removed it
  • Fully charge it
  • Check everything electrical works

Lights, sockets, fridge… test it all now, not when you’re parked in the middle of nowhere.

Tyres, Tyres, Tyres

These matter more than you think.

Before you go:

  • Check tyre pressure
  • Look for cracks or wear
  • Make sure wheel nuts are secure

Your caravan hasn’t moved in a while, so give the tyres a bit of attention before trusting them on a long drive.

Gas and Appliances Check

You don’t want to discover your hob doesn’t work when you’re halfway through cooking dinner.

  • Check gas bottles are connected properly
  • Test appliances like the hob, oven, and heater
  • Make sure everything fires up as it should

Quick check now = no campsite stress later.

Safety Check (The Important Bit)

Not the most exciting, but definitely the most important.

  • Test your brakes
  • Check lights and indicators
  • Make sure your hitch is secure
  • Inspect mirrors and towing setup

Basically, make sure everything is safe and road legal before you set off.

Restock the Essentials

Now for the fun part.

Make sure you’ve got:

  • Bedding and towels
  • Cooking bits
  • Toiletries
  • Chargers and cables

And snacks. Obviously.

Do a Final Walkaround

Before you leave:

  • Doors locked?
  • Windows secured?
  • Nothing loose inside?

A quick once-over can save you from that “did I forget something?” feeling 10 minutes into the journey.

The Bottom Line

Getting your caravan ready for its first outing doesn’t take long, but it makes a huge difference.

Do a few simple checks, sort the basics, and you’ll avoid the classic caravan disasters. No damp surprises, no dead batteries, no last-minute panic.

Just you, the open road, and a caravan that’s actually ready for the trip.
